GARDENS TO VISIT IN SCOTLAND

There are many beautiful gardens to visit throughout Scotland, here are just a few:

ABERDEENSHIRE, BANFFSHIRE, MORAY AND KINCARDINESHIRE

Blackhills Garden, near Elgin, Moray
One of the finest private rhodedendron collections in the world. Open by appointment only.
Logie House Walled Garden
, Forres, Moray
Recently been re-designed garden with formal and informal areas of shrubs and herbaceous planting. Features a wild garden with a stream and a well kept vegetable garden.
Cawdor castle gardens, Cawdor
There are three parts to the gardens at Cawdor Castle - the kitchen garden, flower garden and wild garden. The old kitchen garden now features a maze, orchard and paradise garden. A wild garden runs along a burn by the Castle's west wall.

ARGYLL, BUTE AND THE WESTERN ISLES

Argyll is famous for gardens, being on the Gulf Stream. As a result, especially in spring, there are wonderful rhododendrons, azaleas, magnolias, etc. Some trees found in this area will grow nowhere else in Scotland.

An Cala is a coastal garden created in the 1930's its layout has remained unchanged since its creation. It features meandering paths, streams, terraces and rockeries, interspersed with formalised flowerbeds.
Ardchattan Garden and Priory ruins, Ardchattan Priory,
7 miles east of Oban , Argyll
It is said that the last Parliament meeting to be conducted in Gaelic was held here in 1308 or 1309. The wild garden is a riot of colour in spring with daffodils, narcissi and wild flowers.
Ardencraig Gardens, Ardencraig Lane, High Craigmore, Rothesay, Isle of Bute
Ardencraig walled garden, now council owned, was originally part of the gardens of Ardencraig House, and was laid out by Percy Cane. As well as the gardens you can see aviaries of foreign birds and exotic fish ponds in the grounds of Ardencraig House.
Ardkinglas Gardens, Cairndow, near the head of Loch Fyne.
Ardkinglas Woodland Garden can be enjoyed through all seasons, but the most spectacular time is early summer.

Ascog Hall Ascog, Rothesay, Isle of Bute
Ascog Hall opens its marvellous restored Victorian fernery to visitors from mid-April to mid-October
Barguillean, Barguillean Farm, Taynuilt Argyll
Crarae Gardens Cranrae, south-west of Inveraray.
Trees and shrubs from all over the temperate world thrive in the superb setting of a natural highland glen.

Kilmory Woodland Park, Kilmory Castle, Lochgilphead, Argyll.
Kinlochlaich House Gardens Appin, Argyll between Oban and Fort William
Has the largest Nursery Garden Centre in Scotland.

Mount Stuart Gardens Rothesay, Isle of Bute, Argyll
The gardens, established by the third Earl of Bute between 1725 and 1778, include an octagonal glass pavilion within a kitchen garden.
Stonefield Castle Hotel & Gardens, Stonefield, Tarbert, Argyll.
Torosay Castle and Gardens, Craignure, Isle of Mull, Argyll.
The 12 acres of gardens includes a walk featuring a series of Italian statues, awater garden, Japanese garden, rockery, a domed folly and elaborate square towers on the edge of the terrace.
Younger Botanic garden Benmore Dunoon, Argyll.
The Garden takes its name both from the mountain Beinn Mhor, over whose southern spur it extends, and from Harry George Younger who gave the entire estate to the nation in 1925.

 

CAITHNESS AND SUTHERLAND, ROSS AND CROMARTY

Achiltibuie Hydroponicum, Achiltibuie, Wester Ross
Exotic plants, fruit and vegetables grown without soil.
Dunrobin Castle & Gardens, Golspie, Sutherland
Formal gardens laid out in 1850 by the architect Charles Barry.
Dunbeath Castle
Traditional walled garden recently restored, vegtable and heather gardens, woodland walks.

West Drummuie Garden, Golspie, Sutherland
Attadale, Strathcarron, Wester Ross
Water gardens and sunken formal garden. Restored Victorian vegetable and herb garden.
Inverewe, Poolewe,  Wester Ross
Founded in 1862 by Osgood Mackenzie.Includes Australian tree ferns and exotic plants from China.
Kerrachar Gardens, Kylesku, Sutherland
Accessible only by boat from Kylesku.
Leckmelm Shrubbery and Arboretum: 3 miles from Ullapool.

DUMFRIES AND GALLOWAY

Castle Kennedy Gardens 5 miles east of Stranraer.
Grounds of the ruined Castle Kennedy featuring rhododendrons, azaleas, magnolias and embrothriums.
Glenwhan Gardens Dunragit, By Stranraer, DG9 8PH.
Beautiful and challenging hilltop gardens of 12 acres, over looking Luce Bay, benefits from the warming waters of the gulf stream.
Logan Botanical gardens Logan botanical gardens, a few miles south of Stranraer are owned and maintained by the Royal Botanical Gardens Edinburgh. Because of the favourable climate, and the influence of the gulf stream many plants are semi-tropical.

FIFE AND LOTHIAN

Edinburgh botanical gardens The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh was founded in the 17th century on an area the size of a tennis court; It now extends to 31 hectares - don't miss the glass houses.

THE BORDERS

Dawyck Botanical Gardens Stobo, Peeblesshire EH45 9JU
Dawyck is located 8 miles south-west of Peebles in Tweeddale at the heart of the Scottish Borders. The 25 hectares of landscaped gardens are on the banks of Scrape Burn, a tributary of the River Tweed.
